Our Vision for Education at Oakhaven
The Education Department at Oakhaven is committed to developing and delivering robust, appropriate and timely programmes of education that are flexible and responsive to the ever-changing needs of healthcare professionals involved in end of life care.
As providers of specialist palliative care, Oakhaven aims to increase the awareness of their work within the wider community and share expert knowledge with those involved in end of life care delivery, in order to achieve the highest possible standards of care.
We also ensure our own staff are able to access the necessary training and education, so we have a workforce that remains expert in the developing field of Specialist Palliative Care.
As well as training and education in end of life care, Oakhaven also provides a range of education opportunities for staff and volunteers, including statutory training, computer skills workshops and weekly in-house education sessions.
Meet the Team:
Lucy Smith - Head of Education & Lecturer/Practitioner
Lucy enjoys a joint appointment as Head of Education with Oakhaven Hospice and as Lecturer/Practitioner with the University of Southampton. This collaboration helps bridge the gap between theory and practice in specialist palliative care. Lucy plays an active part in the teaching at Oakhaven and leads the teaching sessions in the classroom, together with other members of the multi-disciplinary team at the Hospice, who deliver specific elements of training as required.
Jenny Caine - Staff Nurse - Situated Learning Project
Jenny has recently joined the Education Department team initially on a 6-month secondment to introduce the Situated Learning project to staff within Nursing Homes within our local community, as well as to Care Agency staff whilst they are attending our patients who are in their own home. The aim of such a project is to increase skills and confidence in practitioners who are involved with patients and families at the end of life. Jenny is a fully qualified Staff Nurse and prior to taking on this role has worked in the Inpatient Unit at the Hospice for 8 years.
Judy Verrell - Education Secretary
Judy has worked in the Education Department for over a year and is the first point of contact for anyone booking a training session or providing further information about our education programme. Judy provides the Education Team with all admin support and also manages the Library at the Hospice.
