Volunteer FAQ

Why does Oakhaven need volunteers?

We couldn’t manage without them! Volunteers give over 75,000 hours of time to Oakhaven every year, in roles as varied as chaplaincy and driving, gardening and patient support. Oakhaven has about three times as many volunteers as staff.

Why do people volunteer?

What we hear most often is that volunteer applicants want to make a difference, and want to do something meaningful with their spare time. Some are retired and feel it’s time to give something back, while others schedule their volunteering around their paid work and other responsibilities. Some are young people who want to help their community and who also want to experience a healthcare environment and see if a career in healthcare is for them.

Who can volunteer?

Anyone over the age of 15 can apply to be an Oakhaven volunteer, either in the Hospice itself, in one of our shops, or to help with fundraising.

Note: Younger people may be able to volunteer as part of the Duke of Edinburgh or similar scheme. Please contact us for more details.

What sort of training do you provide?

You’ll be offered an induction and be invited to attend other in-house training sessions. In most roles you will also be given role-specific training in which you’ll work alongside and learn from an experienced volunteer mentor.

What if I see something in the Hospice that affects me emotionally?

The hospice is a fulfilling and joyful place to volunteer, but it can also be emotionally challenging at times. We provide ample backup and support for all our volunteers. The Volunteer Services team is always here to help you with any difficulties you may face as a volunteer.
