Yesterday (23 February) Rotary was 100 years old and, to celebrate, Lymington club organised a birthday party and auction at George Kidners', Pennington sale room for the benefit of Oakhaven Hospice.

The evening was well attended with around 200 supporters and friends who enjoyed a champagne reception and canapés prior to the main auction which numbered 68 lots including a gold DVD of James Bond 007 'Never Say Never Again' and Victorian Silver Coffee pot that raised £300. Running alongside was a silent auction and raffle whose principal sponsor was Condor Ferries who also gave an additional ferry crossing which made £300 in the main auction.

In all, in total of £12,200 was raised for Oakhaven, which will be used towards the running costs of the Hospice which amounts £1.9 million per annum.

President Maurice McNeil who, with Estelle Drew-Wills, Events Fundraiser of Oakhaven, jointly organised the event said, "This is a magnificent achievement and a fine example of Rotary working in partnership with a vital local charity. We are extremely indebted to George Kidner for his advice, expertise and generosity in offering his company's services free of charge. We were overwhelmed by the support we have received from everyone. It was an evening to remember."

Dr David Spencer, Chief Executive and Medical Director of Oakhaven Hospice said," We are very fortunate to have been chosen by the Rotary Club of Lymington not only to take part in their centennial celebrations but also to be able to work so closely with such a respected organisation in Lymington."
