After setting off from Land’s End on 7th May he has this morning made it to John O’Groats after 871 miles of sailing, a truly epic adventure. Well-known local Lymington company Lymington Precision Engineers (LPE) has just held its first company golf day raising funds for Oakhaven Hospice. The event was held at the Royal Winchester Golf Club and 19 teams representing some of Lymington Precision’s key supply chain took part raising £8,930.
“It was a great day” said LPE Quality Director Daryll Harris the event organiser. “I would like to thank all the teams who took part and everyone who donated prizes and sponsored the event. Our clients and suppliers came together to work with us on this and we are very grateful to them all. Oakhaven is a wonderful local charity that we here at LPE have a special empathy and bond with and we were thrilled to have raised so much money for them”
“This is a wonderful donation” said Oakhaven’s Head of Fundraising & Communications Mike Denny. “We know only too well how much time, effort and resource is put into events like this and to run a successful day as this one clearly was and to raise a sum of money like this is amazing. Thanks to the Office for Civil Society, the total match fund for this year’s Grow Your Tenner is £345,000! This means each charity will have the chance to benefit from up to £2,500 of match funding: £1,000 from one-time donations and £1,500 from Direct Debits.
Grow Your Tenner has raised over £5 million for local charities and community groups across the UK over the last five years. This year we’ll be matching one-time donations made to Localgiving members by up to £10 and regular monthly donations by up to £10 a month for the first three months.
The campaign has now been extended to the 28th November at midday or when the fund runs out – whichever comes first.
Steve Douch from Eastleigh has just completed the London Marathon running in memory of his Grandad Brian Downs who was a journalist with the A&T for over 50 years. “Steve, a very keen runner, completed the gruelling 26.2 miles in a very impressive time of 3 hours 37 minutes” said Oakhaven’s Community Fundraiser Jill West. “We looked after his Grandad and this was a perfect opportunity for Steve to show his gratitude for our care but also to achieve a long held personal goal. Just as big an achievement though was raising some £2,336 for which everyone here is very grateful; we are sure his Granddad would be very proud”
“It was tough; probably the hardest thing that I’ve ever done” said Steve.” The chance to fulfil a dream in memory of someone so influential in my life and to raise money for such a worthy cause was something immensely rewarding. The atmosphere, the support and the organisation was amazing”

Oakhaven Hospice has launched their new fundraising campaign ‘Room to Care’. Help them raise an extra £200,000 every year to open, and keep open, two extra bedrooms in their busy in-patient unit to meet the rising demand for hospice beds across the community. The money is needed to employ the crucial front line staff that provide the highly skilled and specialist care we expect from the Hospice. This includes the nurses, doctors, therapists, counsellors and support staff – they are all involved in delivering that care both physically and emotionally.
Oakhaven’s in-patient unit already admits over 240 people every year, in addition to the extensive work it does out in the community through its Hospice at Home service, but the requirement for palliative care is rising and people‘s needs are becoming more complex and they may stay an in-patient for longer periods of time.
Mike Denny, Head of Fundraising and Communications at Oakhaven Hospice says:
“We need more rooms to care and don’t want to be in a position where we are full and have to turn away a family in crisis – help us to never have to say no. It costs £403.68 to provide a full 24 hours of care for a patient in our in-patient unit. That’s just £16.82 per hour per bed. We’re asking supporters to set up a monthly donation by direct debit to provide the sustainable funding we need to support more people when they need us the most”.
By supporting the ‘Room to Care’ campaign and signing up to a monthly donation, our supporters will be directly helping us admit and care for over 100 more patients and their families in our area, every year.”
One of the families that Oakhaven supported late in 2014 commented: “The shock at how quickly Mum became ill was difficult to come to terms with. From the moment we arrived she was made comfortable and looked out of pain; the care and consideration she was given was overwhelming. We feel so blessed and fortunate you were able to offer her a bed.”
