An appeal from Oakhaven

Spring 2026

Oakhaven nurses and bereavement support

"People think a hospice is where people come to pass away, but it's so much more."

Can you help us care for local patients and their families this year?

When people hear the words 'hospice care', they often think it is only about the final days and hours. But it is so much more than that. Hospice care is about living well for as long as possible. It is about comfort, dignity and choice. It is about helping someone feel like themself again, even in the face of serious illness. And, when the time comes, it is about helping them have the most peaceful and meaningful death possible.

At Oakhaven, we focus on what truly matters to each individual. Our nurses are there every step of the way, helping patients to stay at home where they can be surrounded by love and comfort, or to come into our Inpatient Unit for specialist support. Managing pain, creating the space for families to talk, to laugh and to make precious memories together. Sometimes it's simply about being there - listening, reassuring, and ensuring no one feels alone.

And our care doesn't end when a life does. We are also here for those left behind. Grief can be overwhelming, and no one should have to face it without support. Our bereavement services help families navigate loss, offering comfort, understanding and a place to turn in the weeks and months that follow. This holistic approach - caring for both patients and their loved ones - is at the very heart of what we do. And it is only possible because of the kindness of people like you.

It costs over £24,000 every single day to provide our care free of charge - and demand is growing. At any time, our team is now caring for over 650 patients, plus their families, at the Hospice and in homes throughout the New Forest, Totton and the Waterside. Could you make a gift to ensure local families can receive the hospice care they need?

Your donation will help us continue to provide specialist care, create meaningful moments for families, and ensure that, even in the most challenging circumstances, there can be comfort, connection and compassion. Every contribution, whatever its size, helps us to be there - at the right time, in the right way - for those who need us most.

Jane and Kevin's story

“From the minute we arrived at Oakhaven, the wonderful nurses looked after us all so well - making sure the whole family was okay, as well as Kevin. We were all made to feel so welcome, able to sit with him and be by his side at all times. Kevin was able to relax, to talk, make jokes, and be himself - warm, humorous and present - right to the end."

"We didn't realise that Oakhaven only receives a fraction of its funding from the NHS. They rely heavily on the generosity of the community. Without donations, the nurses who cared for Kevin would not be there. The care and support that Oakhaven provides - for patients and their loved ones - really does make a difference. And it is free of charge for all."

Every year, it costs around £10 million to fund our services – yet just 13% of Oakhaven's funding is covered by NHS statutory funding. For the remaining 87%, our charity relies on your kind donations, fundraising, gifts in wills and income from the Oakhaven shops and social enterprise Oakhaven Care Ltd. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to each and every member of our community who makes kind donations, helps us fundraise and volunteers their time to support Oakhaven. Without you, we simply wouldn’t be here.

Your gift is so important and will help local families. Thank you.
