The Mermaid Ball
Jane and Kara’s Story
Kara was diagnosed with splenic marginal zone lymphoma in 2023, with signs of pre-leukaemia too, and Jane was diagnosed with follicular lymphoma 5 years ago, therefore we call ourselves the “Blood Cancer Buddies”! Both our lymphomas are incurable, but are treatable. With research we hope that one day, these will be curable and we will no longer have to live feeling we’re a ticking time bomb!
During Kara’s diagnosis, she was supported by Jo Huckerby, who had been diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. Oakhaven supported Jo through her final months until she sadly passed away in early 2024, leaving behind 3 children. Her daughter loved The Little Mermaid, as did Jo, with the theme music being played at her funeral. This is why we decided to call it The Mermaid Ball, in Jo’s memory, and the many others lost to Blood Cancer.
Please help us raise money for all those going through cancer, remember, 1 in every 2 people will be diagnosed at some point in their lifetime.
