Living well: signposting and support with Oakhaven Wellbeing

1 February 2026 by Tanya Baddeley

Living well signpost

Living well is vital to your health and wellbeing

If you are living with a life-limiting illness, caring for someone, or navigating grief or bereavement, your wellbeing remains a vital part of living well.

Our next Living Well Hub will take place on Wednesday, 20th May, from 10 am to 12.30 pm, in the Coates Centre at Oakhaven, Lower Pennington Lane, Lymington SO41 8ZZ.

This monthly drop-in session, organised by the Oakhaven Wellbeing team, gathers together important organisations to enable you to find relevant signposting and advice that you might require in order to live well.

The Living Well Hub is here for everyone in our New Forest, Totton and Waterside communities - you don't need to be a patient or family already known to Oakhaven. It will be an opportunity to ask any questions that you might have, or to simply come along and find out what sort of support might be available to you in the community.

At the Living Well Hub, you will find:

  • New Forest Disability Information Service, able to provide advice on benefits and forms, support at home, carer support and equipment for people affected by disabilities.
  • HOPe (Helping Older People New Forest), able to provide advice on attendance allowance, Blue Badge permits, managing paperwork, pension credit and allowances, taxation, benefit claims, disability rights, rent and utility bill problems.
  • CAP (Christians Against Poverty), offering free debt and personal support.
  • Princess Royal Trust for Carers, offering free help, advice and support (including in an emergency).
  • Estate Planning: a variety of professionals able to provide advice on Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney, long term care and business succession.
  • Oakhaven Care: a member of our social enterprise home care provider will be in attendance and able to provide advice and guidance on adult social care.

In addition, various members of our Hospice Team will be on hand to answer any queries that you might have. This might include members of our Wellbeing team, Community Nursing team, Therapy team, Oakhaven Neighbours team, Patient and Family Support team, for example.

Oakhaven has a holistic approach to care and planning

At Oakhaven, our ethos is centred on placing individuals at the heart of their own care and planning. We adopt a 'what matters to me' approach, encouraging open, beneficial conversations that empower individuals to design living well ideas based on their unique values, needs and aspirations. When plans are shaped by individuals themselves, they are more meaningful, achievable and sustainable.

We support this through a range of opportunities, including one-to-one conversations, workshops, seminars, and tailored programmes. These are designed to promote tools, resources and pathways that help build a strong, self-supportive framework. We aim to enhance each person’s ability to

  • self-manage
  • establish goal-setting
  • foster motivation
  • and strengthen commitment to their own wellbeing.

We recognise that wellbeing is deeply personal and is unique to current circumstances. It encompasses physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, social, cultural, environmental and economic aspects, not always at once, but each contributing to a person’s overall experience.

A holistic approach to wellbeing fosters sustainable progress, not just for individuals, but also for families and communities.

Lighting up lives across the New Forest, Totton and the Waterside

20 January 2026 by Tanya Baddeley

Lighting up lives across the New Forest, Totton and the Waterside

In early December, Oakhaven Hospice hosted five special services of remembrance to enable communities to ‘light up a life’ and cherish the memory of loved ones.

‘Light up a Life’ brought together people of all ages in services at Hanger Farm Arts Centre in Totton, Beaulieu Abbey Church, St John’s Church in Hythe, St Thomas’ Church in Lymington and St Saviour’s Church in Brockenhurst. The uplifting services included performances by local choirs and musicians, and a treasured moment to pause and reflect, remembering loved ones before the Christmas season.

“This Christmas we were delighted to add Light up a Life services in Beaulieu and Brockenhurst, responding to suggestions made by our community in 2024”, said Jill West, Community and Events Manager.

“A special thank you to all the schools, singing groups, musicians, performers, volunteers and speakers who gave up their time to make these services so memorable. Thank you also to the Light up a Life sponsors - Cinnamon Care’s Hartwood House and Mornington Court, Tappers Funeral Directors, New Park Manor Hotel and SME HR Consulting - whose financial assistance helped us to cover some of the costs.

“This year our Light up a Life campaign shared experiences about the compassionate care that takes place all year round at Oakhaven, and how our specialist team give the space and time for local families to make precious memories at Christmas, making sure that every moment matters.

“Thank you to everyone in our precious community who joined us at the 2025 Light up a Life events and everyone who kindly supported our Christmas care campaign with a donation. In total, Light up a Life has raised just over £41,000 including a fabulous £5,600 in Gift Aid.”

Oakhaven’s hospice care is provided free of charge, both in the Hospice and in patients’ homes throughout the New Forest, Totton and the Waterside. All funds raised will help to fund Oakhaven’s day-to-day running costs, which last year amounted to £9 million, over £24,500 a day. With only 11% of funding covered by the NHS, Oakhaven relies on the generosity of its community’s donations, fundraising, gifts in wills and income from its charity shops and home care provider, Oakhaven Care Ltd, to cover the remaining 89% of costs.

‘Tree-menous’ recycling project raises £4,000 for Oakhaven Hospice

19 January 2026 by Tanya Baddeley

Treecycle Volunteers from NFU Mutual collecting Christmas trees for recycling

‘Tree-menous’ recycling project raises £5,000 for Oakhaven Hospice

Thursday 8th and Friday 9th January saw the inaugural ‘Oakhaven Treecycle’ campaign raise vital funds for Oakhaven Hospice. The project raised £5,000 thanks to costs being covered by the campaign sponsors Heppenstalls Solicitors and New Forest Escapes.

The new initiative was very well received, with Oakhaven taking over 200 orders to collect trees from the BH25, SO41, SO42 and SO45 areas.

Throughout November and December, supporters were encouraged to book a tree collection and make a donation to Oakhaven Hospice. Volunteers were then organised to collect the trees, saving homeowners the hassle of disposing of their unwanted Christmas trees after the festivities.

Hannah Davies, Oakhaven’s Community Fundraiser who led the campaign, commented; “Many thanks to everyone who supported Oakhaven Treecycle, in particular our sponsors, Heppenstalls Solicitors and New Forest Escapes. Their sponsorship has helped by covering our costs, ensuring that all donations made with the bookings will directly support our services helping local families.

“Many, many thanks also to the thirty enthusiastic volunteers who donated their time to drive vans and collect the trees. Not even storm Goretti could dampen their spirits or stop them from collecting nearly 220 over two days! Working with our dedicated Oakhaven Hospice patient drivers and volunteers, invaluable support was given by staff at SLB, NFU Mutual, SME HR Consulting, Shorefield Holiday Parks, and HSBC ensuring every tree could be collected on time.

“In addition, we are very grateful to This Is Eco in Parley for their support in responsibly recycling these trees into mulch, free of charge.

“This new fundraising event was supported by several New Forest Christmas tree retailers including Agars Nursery, Everton Nurseries, Fairweathers Garden Centre, Moles Country Stores, Redcliffe Garden Centre and Strawberry Fields Christmas Tree Farm.

“Such was the success, Oakhaven Treecycle will be back next Christmas and will incorporate even more areas, including the SO40 and SO43 areas.”

Clarissa Ronchese from Heppenstalls, said; “We’re thrilled to have been the headline sponsor of the Oakhaven Treecycle. It’s a fantastic way to support our local community, raise vital funds for Oakhaven Hospice, and help recycle Christmas trees across the New Forest.”

Jane Wilkinson from New Forest Escapes, commented: “We’re absolutely delighted to have partnered with Oakhaven Hospice for the first year of the Christmas tree recycling initiative. As a proud B Corp, we’re always looking for meaningful ways to give back to our community and reduce our environmental footprint. This partnership not only supports vital hospice care but also ensures that something as simple as recycling a Christmas tree can make a real difference — both for people and the planet.”

All funds raised by Oakhaven Treecycle will help to fund Oakhaven’s day-to-day running costs, which last year amounted to £9 million. With only 11% of funding covered by the NHS, your local hospice relies on kind donations, fundraising, gifts in wills and income from its charity shops and home care provider, Oakhaven Care Ltd, to cover the remaining 89% of costs.

CQC praises ‘outstanding’ care at Oakhaven Hospice

CQC praises ‘outstanding’ care at Oakhaven Hospice

On 13 August, 2025, Oakhaven Hospice underwent an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The report has now been released, rating Oakhaven as ‘Good’ overall across five categories, with Oakhaven’s ‘exceptional’ care commended with a rating of ‘Outstanding’.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is an independent regulator in England that inspects and rates providers to ensure that high-quality, safe, and compassionate care is delivered. A new Single Access Framework has been introduced, which resulted in Oakhaven Hospice receiving a comprehensive inspection in line with acute hospitals rather than health and social care, as was the case for their previous inspection in 2017.

Andrew Ryde, Chief Executive of Oakhaven, commented: “We are delighted with this excellent rating and would like to express our sincere gratitude to our dedicated staff and volunteers for their commitment, exceptional teamwork, and positive outlook. These attributes were instrumental in achieving this outcome. We are particularly proud to have received an ‘Outstanding’ rating for our compassionate care, as well as outstanding marks within the categories of ‘Effective’ and ‘Responsive.’"

Melville Kendal, Oakhaven’s Chair of Trustees, said: “Outstanding care comes from the people who provide it. On behalf of all the Trustees, I would like to thank our wonderful family of staff and volunteers for their unwavering support and hard work. In particular, many thanks to the team who managed the CQC inspection, which involved the meticulous collation of numerous evidence pieces to highlight the exceptional things that our wonderful team does every day. We are very proud of the whole Oakhaven team and of the highly positive rating provided by the CQC inspection.”

The CQC report highlights people's experience of Oakhaven Hospice, and states: “Feedback from patients and any family or carers were overwhelmingly positive. Patients commented about the staff treating them with kindness and dignity and providing effective care and treatment. Patients and family or carers said that communication with the hospice was very good. People did not experience discrimination or inequality. The service made reasonable adjustments for people with disabilities and communication difficulties.”

The CQC inspection reports on five domains: Caring, Safe, Effective, Responsive and Well Led.

In the ‘Caring’ category, the CQC report states: “The service was exceptional at treating people with kindness, empathy and compassion and in how they respected people’s privacy and dignity.” “The service was exceptional at promoting people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.”

In the ‘Safe’ category, the CQC report highlights: “The service had a proactive and positive culture of safety, based on openness and honesty. They listened to concerns about safety and investigated and reported safety events. Lessons were learnt to continually identify and embed good practice.”

In the ‘Responsive’ category, the CQC report comments on person-centred care: “The service was exceptional at making sure people were at the centre of their care and treatment choices and they decided, in partnership with people, how to respond to any relevant changes in people’s needs.”

In the ‘Well Led’ category, the CQC report states: “The service had inclusive leaders at all levels who understood the context in which they delivered care, treatment and support and embodied the culture and values of their workforce and organisation.”

In the ‘Effective’ category, the CQC report outlines: “The service always worked well across teams and services to support people. They shared thorough assessments of people’s needs when they moved between difference services, so people only needed to tell their story once.”

Oakhaven Hospice provides specialist palliative and end-of-life care and support to patients with a clinical referral who live in the New Forest, Totton and Waterside communities. Currently, the hospice supports over 450 patients at any time, at the 10-bed Inpatient Unit and Day Hospice in Lymington and in patients’ homes.

Hospice services include an inpatient unit, community services, medical team, day hospice, therapy, complementary therapy, patient and family support (including counselling) and single point of access service. Two volunteer-based services provide additional support: ‘Neighbours’ in the community and ‘bedside companions’ in the inpatient unit.

Oakhaven’s hospice services are provided free of charge, yet the government covers just 11% of its annual running costs, which currently total £9 million. For the remaining 89% the hospice relies on the generosity of the community - on donations, gifts in wills, fundraising and income generated by our shops and social enterprise home care provider Oakhaven Care.

Stillness and strength: an introduction to reiki for living well

6 January 2026 by Tanya Baddeley

Stillness and strength: an introduction to Reiki for living well

Our Complementary Therapy team will be holding an introduction to Reiki workshop on Monday 22nd June from 10am to 12pm at the Coates Centre, at Oakhaven.

This gentle, supportive workshop offers an introduction to Reiki and how it can promote calm, balance, and emotional wellbeing for people living with illness, those who are bereaved, and carers. Participants will learn what Reiki is, explore its potential benefits, and experience simple relaxation and grounding techniques inspired by Reiki principles. This is not a qualification course, but an accessible, awareness-based session designed to help individuals find moments of peace, connection, and resilience during challenging times.

No prior experience is needed—just an open mind and a desire for self-care.

Cost of workshop: £20.

Spaces are limited, and booking is essential to attend the workshop. Please use the form below to book your place.

Alternatively, please telephone Sally Woods on 01590 670346 or email wellbeing@oakhavenhospice.co.uk.
