Life changes? Make sure your Will is up to date!

25 August 2025 by Tanya Baddeley

Children with grandparents and parents and new home

September is Write a Will Month! Book your appointment from 18th August.

Life changes? Make sure your Will is up to date!

Your life is full of milestones; house purchases, marriage, children or divorce...to ensure that your wishes remain current, you should keep it updated - why not utilise our Write A Will Month to make those changes.

This September, Oakhaven has teamed up with local solicitors and estate planners who will waive their usual Will-writing fee when you make a donation to Oakhaven Hospice.

To ensure your wishes are fulfilled after you are gone, you should have a will in place. Write a Will Month enables everyone to write or update their Will - and to also support Oakhaven to make a difference for local families living across our New Forest, Totton and Waterside communities.

Click the button below to take part in our Write a Will Month, to find out supporting solicitors and will-writers and to make your donation.

Having an up-to-date Will is important

Natascha Maenhaut, Director at RoCHe Wills and Trusts, said, "Making a will is crucial for ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes after your death. It allows you to choose who inherits your money, property, and possessions, rather than leaving this decision to the legal rules of intestacy. Supporting a charity such as Oakhaven Hospice can reduce the Inheritance tax on your estate from 40% to 36%, if 10% or more of your chargeable estate is left to charity."

How you can remember a charity in your Will

There are several ways that you could remember a charity like Oakhaven Hospice in your Will:

  • Pecuniary Gifts: these are monetary gifts - a specific amount of money, e.g. £1,000 to Oakhaven.
  • Specific Gifts: these are individual items that you identify - e.g. a property, jewellery, a painting or shares.
  • Residuary Gift: this is a gift of a portion or all of the remaining assets in your estate after all other debts, taxes, and specific and pecuniary gifts have been distributed. This is the most valuable gift to a charity as it will increase in value with your estate - e.g. £1,000 to each of my siblings and the remainder of my estate to Oakhaven. Or, 50% of my residuary estate to my siblings and the remaining 50% to Oakhaven. Or all my residuary estate to my siblings but if they have all predecease me then my residuary estate passes to Oakhaven.

Write a Will Month is a great opportunity to make or change your will, whilst supporting Oakhaven with a donation. We would like to thank the local solicitors and estate planners who have generously agreed to be a part of our annual will-writing initiative, giving their time and waiving their usual fee so that Oakhaven can benefit from donations.

Your Write a Will Month donations will make a real difference and help you to keep your will and wishes up to date.

Click here for more information about how to make an appointment, or contact the Fundraising Team directly on 01590 677773 or fundraising@oakhavenhospice.co.uk.

Making a Will is important

“We cannot overstate how important it is to make a Will. Whether you are a first-time buyer, a new parent, a thriving business owner, a retiree, or somewhere in between. Choosing a professionally written Will could help your loved ones avoid conflict, save you thousands in Inheritance Tax, and make it easier to make decisions while you’re still alive. Making a Will gives you clarity, control, and peace of mind.”

Did you know? Supporting a charity in your Will can help reduce Inheritance Tax

"If you leave a percentage of your estate (currently 10% or more) to a charity like Oakhaven Hospice in your Will, the value of that gift will be exempt from Inheritance Tax and you will pay a reduced rate of Inheritance Tax on the rest of your taxable estate (at present 36% instead of 40%)"

"I already have a Will, how can I change make changes to it?"

"You can make a change by preparing a Codicil, which is a legal document that can make small changes to your existing Will without the need to rewrite it. Alternatively, by creating a new Will. Laura Eastwood, Director of Fundraising at Oakhaven Hospice, said, “Write a Will Month is a great opportunity to make or change your will, whilst supporting Oakhaven with a donation. We would like to thank the local solicitors and estate planners who have generously agreed to be a part of our annual will-writing initiative, giving their time and waiving their usual fee so that Oakhaven can benefit from donations.

“Every donation directly supports the funding of your local hospice, enabling our specialist teams to provide vital palliative and end-of-life care free of charge to patients, and support for their loved ones. Right now, we are caring for over 450 patients at any one time, in the hospice and in patients’ homes throughout the New Forest, Totton and Waterside - and demand for our services is growing.

“Meanwhile, just 11% of Oakhaven’s funding is covered by the government. For the remaining 89% we rely on the generosity of our community’s donations, fundraising, gifts in wills and income generated by our shops and our home care provider, Oakhaven Care. Your Write a Will Month donations will make a real difference and help you to keep your will and wishes up to date.”

The Oakhaven Walk 2025 raises a phenomenal £168,700

28 May 2025 by Tanya Baddeley

Participants starting the Oakhaven Walk 2025 at Sandbanks

The Oakhaven Walk 2025 raises £168,700 (and still counting!) for end-of-life care and support

We are delighted to announce that The Oakhaven Walk 2025 has raised a whopping £168,700 (with sponsor money still coming in) to fund the delivery of palliative and end-of-life care and support provided to families throughout the New Forest, Totton and Waterside communities.

The Oakhaven Walk took place on Saturday 17th May 2025, with a record-breaking 665 participants walking to Oakhaven Hospice in Lymington from Sandbanks (approx 26 miles), Mudeford (approx 14 miles) and Barton on Sea (approx 8 miles).

The event attracts walkers of all ages, who enjoy the relaxed and uncompetitive nature of the event. This year’s walkers were blessed with sunshine throughout the day, with a light sea breeze to cool them as they trekked along the spectacular Dorset and Hampshire coastline.

Jill West, Oakhaven’s Community and Events Fundraising Manager, said: “Support for this year’s Oakhaven Walk has been phenomenal! On behalf of everyone at Oakhaven, I would like to say a HUGE thank you to all the walkers and everyone who supported our fundraising walk. You joined together to make every moment matter for your local hospice and have raised a record-breaking amount in sponsorship.

“A big thank you to our amazing Volunteers, without whom the event could not have gone ahead. You kept our walkers going with your smiles and encouragement, pointing them in the right direction, registering them at checkpoints and handing out refreshments at just the right moment.

“We are grateful also to Land & Wave, the Beachcomber Café and Hoburne Naish Holiday Park for welcoming us, to Rapid Relief and Harvest Fine Foods for providing water and snacks, and to the Oakhaven Kitchen for the delicious sandwiches. Thank you also to everyone at Keyhaven Yacht Club who provided refreshments to participants as they walked past.

“MANY thanks to our event sponsor, Pennyfarthing Homes, whose fantastic support for 2025, 2026 and 2027 is helping to facilitate our planning and underwrite a lot of the event costs, meaning that every penny raised in sponsorship by our walkers will directly support families living in our communities.”

Oakhaven Walk 2025

Matt Dukes, Managing Director at Pennyfarthing Homes, was one of those walking to raise money for Oakhaven Hospice. He commented:

“Pennyfarthing Homes is delighted to be able to sponsor such a worthy local cause, providing Oakhaven Hospice with much-needed funds to help run the hugely important Oakhaven Walk. As a family business that has built homes here for over 40 years, our connections with the local community run deep in this beautiful part of England, including with the Oakhaven Hospice. All of us at Pennyfarthing take immense pride in knowing that we are making a difference to this invaluable charity and the people it supports. The Oakhaven Hospice doesn’t just provide end-of-life care, it offers crucial support to the whole family, friends and loved ones – helping to ease the pain during one of life’s most difficult times.”

For over 30 years, Oakhaven Hospice has provided compassionate end-of-life care to patients and their loved ones, both in the hospice and in patients’ homes. The charity supports a community of over 150,000 people across the New Forest, Totton and Waterside. Demand is growing for Oakhaven’s vital services; currently, at any time, around 450 patients plus their families receive support in the Hospice and/or in their homes from the Oakhaven teams, free of charge.

In addition to patient referrals, Oakhaven Wellbeing provides specialist support to everyone in the community who is navigating a life-limiting illness, caring for a loved one or experiencing a loss or bereavement. Last year, there were over 5,600 attendances at the Coates Centre for wellbeing support.

All funds raised by the Walk will help to fund Oakhaven’s day-to-day running costs, which last year amounted to £9 million. With only 11% of funding covered by the NHS, your local hospice relies on the kindness of donations, fundraising, gifts in wills and income generated by its charity shops and home care provider, Oakhaven Care Ltd, to cover the remaining 89% of costs.

Click here to find out more about how you could help Oakhaven with a donation, fundraising or a gift in your will, or contact the Fundraising Team directly on 01590 677773 or fundraising@oakhavenhospice.co.uk.

The importance of conversation about dying matters

7 May 2025 by Tanya Baddeley

Two people having a conversation

The importance of conversations about dying matters

As part of Dying Matters Awareness Week 2025, Oakhaven's Pastoral and Spiritual Care Lead, Lois Collings, considers conversations about and consideration of dying matters...

In 2017, the BBC aired a documentary film called A Time to Live. The film followed the lives of twelve people who had received a terminal prognosis and explored how they had found ways to celebrate life, making the most of their remaining time. The film was both moving and thought-provoking. It showed how they had come to terms with their mortality and, in the process, had encountered a sense of growth and healing that had given their lives a deeper meaning, acceptance, and even joy. This speaks to a profound paradox: that, in acknowledging death, we may come to live more fully.

To live fully is to accept that death is a part of the journey of life

This is a recurring theme in many of the world’s various philosophical and religious belief systems. The changing seasons offer us a powerful metaphor for the various stages we face throughout our lives, reflecting the natural cycle of growth, decline, and renewal.

We are all familiar with the cycle of life and death that shapes own human existence. Richard Rohr writes: “Death is not just physical dying, but going to the full depth of things, hitting the bottom, beyond where [we] are in control. And in that sense, we all probably go through many deaths in our lifetime.”

Sundial in the Oakhaven Hospice garden

At Oakhaven, we see time and again how the awareness of mortality can awaken people to what truly matters. Far from being solely about loss, dying can be a time of deep connection, reflection, and personal transformation.

Lydia Dugdale, in The Lost Art of Dying, outlines two essential elements for living and dying well. First, to accept our finite existence; and second, to embrace the support of a community. We need others to walk alongside us, bear witness to our struggles, and hold us in love.

Why talk about death and dying?

How we think and talk about death and dying is important - personally, with our family and friends, in society as a whole, in general terms or more specifically as we face our own, or a loved one’s terminal prognosis. Such conversations help us see how death is a natural part of life, not something to be feared or avoided. Talking openly about our hopes, fears, and wishes can allow us and our loved ones to prepare, connect, and support one another through the most challenging of times. Ultimately, talking about death and dying is an act of choosing to live with intention, right to the very end.

two people having a hug

A holistic approach

Oakhaven's holistic approach addresses the physical, social, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of care for patients and their loved ones. Anyone who has navigated the path of terminal illness will know that differing aspects of a person’s care needs often co-exist, sometimes in a complex and messy way. Our skilled team of multi-disciplinary professionals are available to help patients and their loved ones talk about death and dying at all points along the journey. And we also want to engage the community.

This week, Oakhaven Hospice is participating in Hospice UK’s Dying Matters Awareness Week. As a centre of palliative care excellence, we strive at all times for our patients and their loved ones to live as fully as possible in the light of a terminal prognosis.

There has been much in the news recently about the Assisted Dying Bill, but also encouragingly, a widening discussion about the provision of palliative care and the role of hospices in helping people to die peacefully and in a dignified manner.

Returning to the documentary film mentioned earlier, it seemed as if each participant found a way to face their prognosis with grace and dignity. Whether seen as a final transformation, a completion, or a passage to something beyond, death invites us to reflect on legacy, hope, and healing. These reflections – mental, emotional, and spiritual – can help us to live more fully, even to be more fully alive, whilst also dying.

If you have read this far, we invite you to join a broader conversation about how we think about death and dying – whether it is a new topic for you or something you have long considered.

Consider these questions:

  • How far do you see your own cycles of growth, decline and renewal?
  • Where have you found transformation in the midst of loss?
  • What has helped you through difficult times?
  • How have you celebrated life’s gifts, even the hard-won ones?
  • Who has walked alongside you and witnessed your journey?
  • Where have meaningful conversations occurred – and where have they been absent?
  • How can Oakhaven help to create space for those conversations, individually, in groups, or across the wider community?
family walking together outside

Death remains a mystery

Beyond experiencing physical symptoms, people will often grapple with profound questions—about meaning, legacy, forgiveness, fear, hope, and what lies beyond. At Oakhaven, we are committed to helping people live most fully while caring for their physical decline and demise. We hold a space where people can explore in depth all that is important to them and their loved ones. That is where true dignity in death and dying lies; honouring all that it means to be fully human, and that is why talking about death and dying is so important, because Dying Matters.

I will not die an unlived life

by Dawna Markova

I will not die an unlived life
I will not live in fear
of falling or catching fire.
I choose to inhabit my days,
to allow my living to open me,
to make me less afraid,
more accessible,
to loosen my heart
until it becomes a wing,
a torch, a promise.
I choose to risk my significance;
to live so that which came to me as seed
goes to the next as blossom
and that which came to me as blossom,
goes on as fruit.
