Desmond Swayne MP visits Oakhaven in support of Hospice Care Week

4 December 2023 by Tanya Baddeley

This year, hospices are opening their doors to local MPs as part of Hospice Care Week to share what it’s like to work at a hospice. MPs across the UK are partnering with their local hospice to shadow a variety of roles including nurses, shop volunteers, gardeners or members of the catering team.

Andrew Ryde, Sir Desmond Swayne MP, Melville Kendal, Denise Major and Dr Fliss Morgan in the Oakhaven gardens.

Raising awareness of the important work carried out by charitable hospices

On Friday 24th November 2023, Oakhaven Hospice welcomed the Rt Hon Sir Desmond Swayne TD. The MP for New Forest West visited Oakhaven as part of a Hospice Care Week initiative by Hospice UK to raise awareness of the important work carried out at charitable hospices across the UK.

Sir Desmond joined Oakhaven’s Medical Director Dr Fliss Morgan on the ward round, where he had the opportunity to meet staff and patients at Oakhaven’s Inpatient Unit and Day Hospice.

Afterwards, Sir Desmond met Melville Kendal, Chair of the Board of Trustees, Andrew Ryde, Chief Executive and Denise Major, Director of Patient Services, for a conversation about statutory funding and how a more equitable and sustainable level of funding from the government may be possible in the future.

Currently, only 11% of Oakhaven’s costs are covered by statutory NHS funding. For the remaining 89%, Oakhaven relies on donations, fundraising, legacies and the income raised by its retail charity shops and social enterprise Oakhaven Care Ltd. Funding for hospices throughout the UK is becoming ever more challenging in light of the ‘cost of living crisis’, with the sector predicting a shortfall of over £150m by the end of the year.

The Rt Hon Sir Desmond Swayne TD MP said, “Oakhaven Hospice fully deserves the tremendous reputation it has for its care, together with the gratitude and affection and support of people throughout the New Forest, Totton and Waterside.

“I enjoyed my visit to Oakhaven to meet some of their magnificent team and to gain a better understanding of the care and support provided to patients and their loved ones.”

Andrew Ryde said, “We would like to thank Sir Desmond for his visit to Oakhaven as part of Hospice Care Week, to understand more about working at hospices and the challenges we face in the hospice sector.”

We Are Hospice Care

Organised by Hospice UK, Hospice Care Week officially runs from 9-15 October, with MPs across the country visiting their local hospice both in the run-up to the week and after. This year Hospice Care Week’s ‘We Are Hospice Care’ theme sheds light on the people who make up a hospice, celebrating the breadth, diversity and excellence of the hospice workforce. From clinical staff to bereavement counsellors, kitchen staff to volunteer gardeners, the people who make up a hospice are what makes hospice care so special.

Over 40,000 people work in charitable hospices across the UK. Hospices support more than 300,000 people every year and work across the system to reduce pressure on the NHS and train and support health and care workers. But right now is a challenging time for hospices, and the need for hospice care is growing. The cost of living crisis has seen their costs soar, making fundraising for the majority of their income increasingly challenging. At the same time, recruiting, retaining, and paying their dedicated staff a fair wage has never been tougher.

By engaging with their local hospice, MPs can support brilliant hospice staff and make sure they’re not forgotten by national and local decision-makers.

Toby Porter, CEO of Hospice UK says: “It is the wonderful people that work and volunteer in hospices that make hospice care so special, and they often find it to be the most rewarding and satisfying job of their career. We are delighted that many MPs are joining their local hospice team for a day, experiencing first-hand what it is like to work or volunteer in such a vital service. It’s a great opportunity for MPs to hear directly from people who use hospice services, or work and volunteer there, on what they can do to support the sector, and to ensure their constituents can continue to access the best possible care at the end of their lives.”

‘Oaktober’ raises £19,550 for Oakhaven Hospice

20 November 2023 by Tanya Baddeley

Oaktober fundraising for Oaktober Hospice in October

Oaktober: fundraising for Oakhaven in October

Oakhaven Hospice is delighted to announce that its ‘OAKtober’ challenge raised £19,550.

‘OAKtober’ was a month-long challenge for everyone in the New Forest, Waterside and Totton communities, to raise much-needed funds for Oakhaven Hospice during October. Numerous individuals, groups, businesses and schools took part, doing ‘something different’ for the whole month.

A number of local nurseries and schools took part in the dressing up ‘Wear It Green’ day on Friday 20th October and Lymington Junior School held a cake sale to support Oakhaven.

Groups and families also got involved to do something for Oaktober, including the Thomas family, who set themselves an epic challenge of running 500km in Oaktober. They completed it in only 25 days, raising an excellent £1,045.

After participating in Oakhaven’s Acorn Project, where he spent time with patients and volunteers, schoolboy Wilf Smith decided to take on the Kent Classic 47km cycle ride to help and thank the hospice, raising over £600.

Businesses supported the Oaktober fundraising month in a variety of fun and original ways, including a ‘Come Dine with Me’ event at Clayhill House B&B, a 24-hour Dance-a-thon at Mornington Court Cinnamon Care Home and a special ‘Oak-Thai-ber’ menu at Lanes of Lymington.

Sharp Hair of Lymington raised a whopping £1,145 during Oaktober. Salon owner, Angela Griffiths, said; “It’s our 15th year of business in Lymington, and each year we support a charity, so we decided on a manageable challenge for the amazing OAKtober event. We pledged to cycle, run and walk 110 miles and complete 4650 squats. We added this into our busy salon and home lives. It was a 15-20 minute challenge over 31 days, anyone can do it, just find your thing and commit! We smashed it by completing 133 miles!”

Oakhaven’s Community Fundraising Manager, Jill West, said: “We would like to thank everyone who took part in our Oaktober fundraising month. We were delighted to hear about the challenges taken on by individuals, families, schools, groups and businesses throughout our catchment area - and beyond. One family sent us a photo of them ‘Wearing It Green’ in Australia!

“Whether donating loose change in ‘Oaktober change pots’, dressing up in green for our Wear It Green day, holding a cake sale or taking on a challenge, every donation will help Oakhaven to support patients and their loved ones.”

To donate please visit oakhavenhospice.co.uk/how-to-donate

All funds raised will help Oakhaven Hospice support local people throughout the New Forest, Totton and Waterside areas at the most difficult of times. Did you know that as well as the ten beds in the Inpatient Unit, Oakhaven helps patients with life-limiting illnesses in their own homes - around 300 at any time? Last year Oakhaven cared for 1,394 patients and their families and loved ones, with around 3,200 visiting the Coates Centre to benefit from wellbeing support.

If you know someone affected by a life-limiting illness, who is a carer, or who is living with a loss, support is available at the Coates Centre. Visit oakhavenhospice.co.uk/wellbeing for more information.

Santa Dash start 2022 in aid of Oakhaven Hospice in Lymington

Register now for our festive 3km fun run in Lymington

On Sunday 3rd December, Oakhaven will once again turn Lymington into a sea of Santas and festive friends. This will be our 14th annual Santa Dash, which over the years has raised more than £168,000 for the Hospice.

Known by many as the unofficial start of Christmas, our 'Santa Dash' is a fantastically fun opportunity to gather together with friends, family and colleagues for a run - jog - walk - stroll - or even scoot around the streets of Lymington. Although some might be speeding to win, many others 'dash' far more sedately.

Ticket prices have been reduced this year, recognising everyone's increased pressures with the cost of living. Register today for just £12.50 per Adult and £5 per Child - there is also a Family ticket for £30 (2 Adults and 2 Children).

Dressing up is all part of the fun!

We have a limited stock of Santa suits from previous years, available on a first-come, first-served basis. The sooner you register your entry, the more likely you are to receive a suit in your size!

We encourage regular Santa Dash supporters to wear again any Santa suits they may have saved from previous years - and encourage anyone who would prefer to wear fancy dress as a different festive character to do so! We invite all budding elves, snowmen, reindeer, Christmas puddings, crackers and fairies!

A fabulous event for all the family

Our Santa and Festive Friends Fun Run is a joyous event for all the family. Laughter is widespread as you suddenly recognise a friend hidden behind a Santa beard or fairy glitter!

Children will love to dress up and take part. Decorated pushchairs and buggies are welcome, as are mobility scooters. If you are bringing your dog, feel free to dress them up - but short leads are a must.

Spectators are welcome to come and cheer the participants as they dash around Lymington.

So ho-ho-ho what are you waiting for? Click here to register for our Santa and Festive Friends Fun Run today!

Run to help people living in the New Forest, Totton and Waterside areas

The funds raised by our Santa and Festive Friends Fun Run will help local people throughout the New Forest, Totton and Waterside areas at the most difficult of times. Did you know that as well as the beds in our In-Patient Unit, Oakhaven helps patients with life-limiting illnesses in their own homes - around 300 at any time? Oakhaven Neighbours celebrates 10th birthday

7 November 2023 by Tanya Baddeley

10 years of our volunteer-led, community-based neighbours scheme

The Oakhaven Neighbours scheme was created ten years ago to provide Oakhaven’s patients with non-clinical and companionship support at home. Over the past decade, this volunteer programme has flourished, now with over fifty volunteers generously giving a few hours a week.

In 2013 it was identified that many of Oakhaven’s patients were suffering from loneliness and isolation at home. Sometimes people facing end of life can feel lonely even when there are family members and carers around. Forming a friendship with someone outside of their illness can make a huge difference to a person’s well-being.

Oakhaven Neighbours was created in response to this need; a team of trained volunteers now each generously give several hours a week to support people in their own homes.

The ‘Neighbours’ help with everyday tasks that can sometimes seem overwhelming; going out for a chat over coffee or sometimes sitting with them so that their carer can get out for a much-needed break safe in the knowledge that their loved one is in capable hands.

In just the last year alone, Neighbours have supported 120 people across the New Forest, Totton and Waterside areas and given a total of 4,400 hours!

The amazing difference is evident in Theresa’s story, she became a Neighbour to a lady who hadn’t left her flat for six years. As Theresa said, “I took my lady out in a wheelchair lent by Oakhaven; it was the first time she had been out in six years, except for within an ambulance! We went for a stroll around her neighbourhood; she absolutely loved it and was so happy feeling the breeze on her cheeks!! I left a happy lady, and we look forward to going further afield next time.

Another Oakhaven Neighbour explained: “Being a hospice neighbour is so varied and enjoyable. It’s humbling to know how much giving up a small amount of time to support others can mean to them, whether it be doing their shopping, taking them shopping, gardening, walking the dog, going out for a drive around the New Forest or to a garden centre or setting the world to rights over a coffee and bacon and egg sandwich in a local cafe. It is a very valuable, worthwhile use of free time, developing friendships with people with different or very interesting life histories; I so love a good chat.”

Volunteer and be a part of something special!

A friendly team of volunteers, Oakhaven Neighbours welcome new volunteers throughout the year. Full training is provided, along with ongoing support. Become an Oakhaven Neighbour and you’ll make a real difference to the quality of someone’s life and be a part of a dedicated and valued team.

If you have a little time to pop in and visit someone locally, Oakhaven would love to hear from you.  To find out more about the scheme and becoming an Oakhaven Neighbour, please contact Sara at neighbours@oakhavenhospice.co.uk leaving a contact telephone number.

Voices for Hospice Choir

6 November 2023 by Tanya Baddeley

Voices for Hospice Choir - crowd of people in front of the stage

Voices for Hospices Choir Concert in aid of Hampshire's Hospices

The Voices for Hospices Choir is delighted to announce that after a wonderful concert held at the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens on 2nd September 2023, raised an amazing £26,000 for Hampshire’s Hospices, including Oakhaven Hospice.

On a lovely sunny and warm day, around 700 singers met in the Gardens for the only rehearsal, for the evening performance of “The Armed Man - A Mass for Peace” by Sir Karl Jenkins.

Singers were joined by friends and family for a lively picnic at the top of the performance arena before the concert start at 7.00pm. All were invited to visit our Hospice Village, where all eight of our Hospices had a presence.

The CEO of both Mountbatten Hospices, Nigel Hartley, spoke movingly of the need for Hospice care and the necessary preparedness of friends and family, which together with our VfH Choir Chaplain, the Rev Marion Dodd, and a message read out from Sir Karl, combined together to start a moving and exciting concert.

John Sutton conducted the VfH Sinfonia, a small group of virtuoso instrumentalists, who accompanied sensitively and with great excitement for the various movements in the work. Together with our four soloists, they all achieved a standard not normally associated with a “Come and Sing” performance.

As daylight turned to dusk and then to dark, the singers switched on their mobile phones and torches, which together with the purple up lit trees and bushes made the whole experience magical for all present.

“Spine tingling” “Gave me goosebumps” “So moving” “An amazing sing” are just a few comments from the hundreds of emails received by VfH Choir.

Thank you all for your presence and contributions to this amazing cause.

The official handover of the money raised will be at midday on the 1st December at the Mountbatten Hampshire charity chalet at Winchester Christmas Market. Do come and see it, and visit the market as well!

John and Jenny’s Story

6 November 2023 by Tanya Baddeley

John and Jenny sat on train

Light really does come from darkness

"I owe so much to Oakhaven. The hospice helped me through my most difficult times – proving that light really does come from darkness."

My wife, Cathy, and I shared so much. Like me, she was a headteacher, and we met at a headteacher’s conference – both working with children with special educational needs. We fell in love and married in 2002 when Cathy joined me in Staffordshire from her home in Dartford.

She was so lovely with people and great with our four children and grandchildren, Emma, Fira and JJ. When I retired, we left the Midlands for Burton Bradstock and the beautiful Jurassic Coast. I’m forever grateful for those golden years.

In 2011, after four happy years in Burton Bradstock, we learned the devastating news that Cathy had cancer; Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. After initial treatment at the local hospital, she was referred to Southampton, a round trip of over three hours – it was incredibly exhausting for both of us. We decided to move closer, arriving in New Milton in 2013, but the treatment and travel took a toll on us. We were seeking counselling at the hospital at the time; it was then they suggested we speak to Oakhaven Hospice.

John and Cathy

"...support felt like a reassuring hug."

After meeting the team, Cathy decided Oakhaven was the best place for her to be and she spent her last weeks there when her treatments failed. Everything about the care she received at Oakhaven was so gentle; always compassionate, never clinical. The family were encouraged to visit and we got to know the nurses and other staff well; their support felt like a reassuring hug. Cathy’s room looked out over the garden, so when Jen, Cathy’s daughter, wanted quiet time with her, we could go for a walk and explore with the grandchildren. Truthfully, it was one big care package for all of us.

I lost Cathy in September 2017. The phone rang at 2 am and a voice calmly broke the news. It was a relief in a way; Cathy was no longer in pain and despair, and so was I – knowing she was at peace in those final days.

In the weeks that followed, I attended Oakhaven’s coffee mornings, with other bereaved people, to natter over a brew and biscuits. That’s where I got to know Jenny, whose partner, Phil, died of multiple cancers – one day after Cathy, in a nearby room.

Jenny and Phil had met at school and were childhood sweethearts. Marrying in 1966, they have two sons, Graeme and Nigel, and four lovely grandchildren. As a nurse Jenny carried on working and was also Phil’s carer for many years – but, as with Cathy and me, Oakhaven was there for them during Phil’s final moments. A lover of folk and classical music, the nurses made sure Phil’s favourite music was playing by his bedside throughout his final nights – little touches like these make the biggest difference.

Jenny and Phil

"We understood each other and shared our feelings of grief..."

I can’t tell you how precious those conversations with Jenny were – telling each other about Phil and Cathy. We understood each other and shared our feelings of grief – a medicine like no other. Jenny always saved me a seat at coffee mornings; then we both joined Oakhaven’s wonderful bereavement course, six weeks of sympathetically exploring our feelings!

I think our love for each other grew from those quiet moments, remembering Phil and Cathy together. Meeting each other meant a purpose had come back into our lives, a lightness in the darkness – and a new love. During the first Covid lockdown, we realised that we really missed each other. So, when Jenny was able to sell her house, she moved to the same road as me in New Milton, where we continue to build our partnership. The light also burns with our friends from the Bereavement Group – we continue to meet and support each other over a monthly lunch.

"Oakhaven taught us the most invaluable lesson – moving on doesn’t mean forgetting the people who came before. The memories of Cathy and Phil burn bright in us both."

I know just how important it is to hold that space for remembrance. It’s why Light up a Life is such a special event – I’ve seen it firsthand. I really hope you’ll be there this year too and find your light.

With many thanks, John and Jenny
