Support Susie’s Santa Dash on walking sticks with MS

3 December 2025 by Tanya Baddeley

Susie Kyd has MS and will be doing Santa Dash with walking sticks

Susie's marathon Santa Dash Challenge!

Susie Kyd has multiple sclerosis (MS) and will be using walking sticks participate in Santa Dash at her own speed and in her own time. She is hoping to fundraise lots of money for Oakhaven Hospice.

“I’m taking part in the Oakhaven Santa Dash 2025. I had planned on doing it when I turned 50 in 2020 - but then a massive multiple sclerosis (MS) relapse that year stopped that happening - having had MS since 1995 with very few problems.

I now need 2 sticks to walk, and that’s with difficulty. So I’m not expecting to do this fast. I imagine I may be the last past the finishing line, but I’m walking it with great friends and Ed my partner - and a wheelchair in case I need to sit for a minute or two on the way (The joy of MS - and now inflammatory arthritis in addition)

These 3kms will be like walking a marathon for me - how different from the treks I used to do not so long ago, so any donation you give will be very gratefully received and will spur me on on the day in my Santa suit! Thank you so much.” - Susie

Recognising this incredible undertaking, Susie’s employer, Tokio Marine Kiln, has pledged to match-fund her fundraising up to the value of £5,000.

We hope you’ll join us in applauding Susie on her Santa Dash challenge! If you would like support Susie with a donation, please visit https://www.justgiving.com/page/susan-kyd-1761975795225.

To take part in this year's Santa Dash, you can register online by 12 noon on Friday 5th December by clicking the link below.

Coping with grief at Christmas

2 December 2025 by Tanya Baddeley

Christmas tree and cosy blanket by roaring fire

Coping with grief at Christmas

Christmas is associated with joy and celebration. A time when, traditionally, people spend time with their families and loved ones. This can be difficult for those spending Christmas alone, particularly as preparations seem to start well before Christmas.

For those who are grieving, Christmas can intensify feelings of loss and sadness.

This can be particularly the case during the first Christmas without the person you love being around. You may feel you want to miss Christmas altogether, even if there are friends and family wanting you to take part.

It’s important to remember that there is no right or wrong. No rules. Do what you need to do. And do it as one moment, one step, one breath at a time.

There are some things you can do that might help you over this difficult period:

1. Avoid the hype.

Christmas is everywhere. You can cut down your exposure to it by using advert blockers online, unsubscribing from marketing emails, watching DVDs, recording live TV so you can fast-forward the ads, and watching or listening to streaming services or BBC to avoid ads. Shop online (at independent shops if possible) to avoid Christmas ‘fluff’ and endlessly looping Christmas music.

2. Give yourself permission.

Give yourself permission to laugh, cry, go out, stay in, or go to things and leave early. And whatever you plan to do, you are totally allowed to change your mind.

3. Say no - and don’t give in to pressure from others.

Don’t feel compelled to join in festivities that you would rather avoid or to spend time with people you feel don’t understand how you feel. Just say no. You don't have to go to the party, wear the jumper, or get involved in the Secret Santa if you don't want to. Spending Christmas alone, with friends, with strangers, working, volunteering, whatever – if it's what you want to do, then just do it. Don't feel that you have to fit in.

4. Announce your intentions early.

Talk about your intentions for the festive period early, to stop the well-intentioned invitations. Plan Christmas Day in advance, perhaps visit your local church, make yourself a special breakfast, buy yourself a present to enjoy on the day - or escape to a remote shepherd’s hut!

5. Be aware that things can get overwhelming - and have an exit strategy

If you are part of a big celebration, it can get too much sometimes. Take a breath, try grounding techniques, or find a quiet corner for a moment, or head out into the middle of nowhere and yell at the sky. Driving or having a taxi booked means that you can leave early if you want to – taxis can always be rescheduled if you find you are having fun.

6. Ignore Christmas completely.

It's allowed. Buy nice non-Christmas food, stock up on non-Christmas films, binge on box sets. Shut the door on Christmas Eve and ignore the world, and then emerge on Boxing Day. Switching off social media can help you to keep Christmas away too.

7. Volunteer.

Volunteer to help at a local charity, such as one providing meals for the homeless or the elderly over the Christmas period. This can be a welcome distraction at the same time as helping others. But equally, don’t feel you have to.

8. Create new memories.

Do something totally different. Stock up on goodies, stack your Kindle full of books, see a friend for Christmas lunch. You might want to put up a tree and decorate it with mementos of your loved one, or light a candle in their memory. Go out and ‘just be’ whilst looking at a view, potter around, eat your body weight in chocolate, and sleep. You can have a tradition of not having a tradition. Create new memories.

9. Look after yourself.

Exercise, such as a gentle walk, is a good way to boost the endorphins that can trigger a positive feeling. Eating well and getting enough sleep are always important in helping to keep you healthy, particularly so during the festive period. Try not to drink too much alcohol as this could lead to feelings of anger, aggression or depression.

10. Enjoy it.

It might be a good idea to make some plans, otherwise you might just drift and feel worse. But don't plan so much that you feel guilty about not doing it all. Stock up on the food you need, decorate the house and tree if you want to, plan to catch up on some hobbies or some reading, go for a walk, pamper yourself with a long bath. Whatever you really fancy that you don't normally have time to do. You are allowed to enjoy whatever it is that you are doing. Don't feel guilty.

Whatever you do, make sure it is your decision. Do what you feel like doing on the day - or decide to ignore Christmas altogether and treat it as any other day.

A new Oakhaven shop for Lyndhurst

19 November 2025 by Tanya Baddeley

Oakhaven Lyndhurst shop opening

A new Oakhaven Hospice shop for Lyndhurst

On Wednesday 19th November, Oakhaven Hospice opened a new charity shop at 38-40 Lyndhurst High Street.

Oakhaven Lyndhurst has been highly anticipated and is the hospice’s tenth charity shop, joining the shops in Hythe, Totton, New Milton and Lymington. Each is an ‘Aladdin’s cave’ filled with real treasures and the ultimate in recycling and sustainable shopping.

The new shop stocks preloved ladieswear and menswear - including a designer section with at least 75% off original selling prices! There is also a homeware section and a children’s department - crammed with clothes, accessories, toys, games and children’s books. The shop is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

The Lyndhurst shop was opened officially by Melville Kendal, Chair of the Oakhaven Board of Trustees, who said, “It’s a delight to be able to open a shop here in Lyndhurst, I’d like to thank to everyone who has helped to make it possible. I’m sure this new shop will be a great addition to what is an important contribution towards funding Oakhaven Hospice. All profits from our shops go straight to the Hospice and without that retail income, Oakhaven Hospice would really struggle. I wish the team of staff and volunteers the very best for the future.”

Andrew Ryde, Chief Executive of Oakhaven, said, “Thank you to everyone who donates items for us to sell in our shops and to everyone who supports us with purchases. As a charity, only 11% of Oakhaven’s costs are covered by the NHS. Your support helps to fund vital end-of-life care for patients and specialist support for their families and loved ones - free of charge - when they need it most. Oakhaven’s care and support extends throughout our New Forest, Totton and Waterside communities.”

Oakhaven welcomes your donations of items for the charity shops; anything that can be carried in a box or a bag can be taken to any of the Oakhaven shops during opening hours. For larger items or to organise a collection, please click here for details, or call 01590 637781.

Oakhaven volunteers receive a twenty per cent discount in the Oakhaven shops! John D Wood & Co: A Partnership with a Strong Foundation

18 November 2025 by Tanya Baddeley

John D Wood & Co sponsors the Oakhaven Santa Dash

John D Wood & Co has supported Oakhaven for nearly 30 years!

A partnership with strong foundations

For nearly 30 years, John D Wood & Co. has been a proud supporter of Oakhaven Hospice. This year, their partnership reaches a meaningful milestone, with donations now exceeding £30,000 — a true reflection of the estate agency’s long-standing commitment to local hospice care.

Oakhaven Hospice, based in Lymington, provides vital specialist care for patients facing life-limiting illness and support for their loved ones. The charity relies heavily on donations and local fundraising to continue its compassionate services, making the consistent support from John D Wood & Co. both meaningful and impactful.

Each year, the firm sponsors two of Oakhaven's most anticipated community events: the Oakhaven Family Fun Day in June, and the Oakhaven Santa Dash in December. These annual fixtures have become cherished traditions, drawing residents together in the spirit of generosity and community celebration. Whether it’s cheering on participants in festive costumes at the Santa Dash or enjoying games and activities during the summer fun day, John D Wood & Co.'s support has helped to keep these events thriving year after year.

Event sponsorship - helping Oakhaven to cover costs

The partnership between John D Wood & Co. and Oakhaven Hospice serves as a powerful example of long-term corporate support making a tangible difference. Sponsorship helps Oakhaven to cover some of the inevitable costs of its fundraising events, ensuring that the money raised by participants and supporters goes further to help provide hospice care for local families.

Although Oakhaven provides hospice care free of charge, a mere 11% of its costs are covered by the NHS. For the remainder it relies on the generosity of donations, fundraising, gifts in wills, business support and income from its shops and social enterprise, the home care provider Oakhaven Care Ltd.

As they look to the future, John D Wood & Co. remains committed to continuing their support, helping Oakhaven grow and reach even more families in need.

‘Treecycle’ your Christmas tree and help Oakhaven Hospice

10 November 2025 by Tanya Baddeley

Oakhaven Treecycle

Oakhaven Treecycle: recycle your Christmas tree and help Oakhaven Hospice

Book now to recycle your Christmas tree and help your local hospice!

This Christmas, Oakhaven Hospice is introducing a new initiative. From Thursday 8th to Monday 12th January 2026, Oakhaven Hospice’s ‘Treecycle’ volunteers will be collecting Christmas trees from homes and taking them to be recycled.

In this inaugural year, the initiative will cover the SO41, SO42, SO45 and BH25 postcodes, and the hospice plans to roll the scheme out to other local postcodes the following year.

Book your Treecycle today!

Click here to book your real Christmas tree collection online  and make a suggested donation of £15, which will help Oakhaven to provide vital hospice care services to local patients and their families. One of the team will be in touch nearer the time to confirm which day your collection will take place, along with instructions for the collection (which of course includes removing your decorations!)

Thank you to our sponsors!

Hannah Davies, Community Fundraiser at Oakhaven Hospice, said, “We are delighted to introduce Treecycle, a new fundraising initiative that helps our local community to recycle their Christmas trees, whilst raising vital funds for the Hospice. Many thanks to our Treecycle headline sponsor, Heppenstalls, and associate sponsor, New Forest Escapes, whose generous support has enabled us to start Treecycle.

“We’re also very grateful to Moles Country Stores, Everton Nurseries, Agars Nursery, Redcliffe Garden Centre and Fairweathers Garden Centre, all of whom are helping us to promote Treecycle to customers when they purchase their Christmas trees.”

"We’re delighted to be the headline sponsor of the Oakhaven Tree-Cycle," said Clarissa Ronchese, Marketing Executive at Heppenstalls. It’s a fantastic way to support our local community, raise vital funds for Oakhaven Hospice, and help recycle Christmas trees across the New Forest."

Jane Wilkinson, Managing Director of New Forest Escapes, said, "We’re absolutely delighted to be partnering with Oakhaven hospice for the first year of the Christmas tree recycling initiative. As a proud B Corp, we’re always looking for meaningful ways to give back to our community and reduce our environmental footprint. This partnership not only supports vital hospice care but also ensures that something as simple as recycling a Christmas tree can make a real difference — both for people and the planet."

Could you volunteer for Oakhaven Treecycle?

It is thanks to the generosity of volunteeers that Oakhaven will be able to provide the ‘Treecycle’ service. Already several individuals, groups and local businesses have stepped up to volunteer their time and the charity welcomes more volunteers! If you would like to volunteer for Oakhaven Treecycle, please contact Hannah on fundraising@oakhavenhospice.co.uk or call 01590 677773.

All funds raised by Oakhaven Treecycle will help to fund Oakhaven’s day-to-day running costs, which last year amounted to £9 million. With only 11% of funding covered by the NHS, your local hospice relies on kind donations, fundraising, gifts in wills and income from its charity shops and home care provider, Oakhaven Care Ltd, to cover the remaining 89% of costs.

Colten Care’s support for Oakhaven over 25 years reaches £325K

23 October 2025 by Tanya Baddeley

Colten Care at Oakhaven Hospice

Colten Care's support over 25 years has generated £325,000 for Oakhaven

Colten Care’s founding members, John Colwell and Adrian Otten, established a strong partnership with Oakhaven Hospice over two and a half decades ago. Since then, Colten Care has contributed over £325,000 to support the provision of complementary therapies.

In addition to sponsorship and fundraising, the Colten team volunteers at Oakhaven’s Family Fun Day each June and participates in the annual Oakhaven Golf Day.

Colten Care’s support has enabled Oakhaven to offer complementary therapy to hospice patients, free of charge. Complementary therapies are gentle non-invasive treatments which complement traditional medical treatments, helping to improve emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing. Treatments offered at Oakhaven may include aromatherapy, reflexology, massage, reiki, and Indian head massage.

The Oakhaven Complementary Therapy team comprises two employed staff members and eleven volunteers, who are trained to provide relaxing hand and foot massages. The team supports patients as outpatients, at home, and in the Inpatient Unit. The Comp Therapy Coordinator also organises several well-being workshops at the Coates Centre, such as “Managing Insomnia,” “Stress Management for Wellbeing,” and “Learning a Hand Massage.”

Elaine Farrer, Chief Operating Officer of Colten Care, visited Oakhaven in late August to receive an update on the complementary therapy and to observe firsthand the ongoing refurbishment of the hospice’s Inpatient Unit.

Andrew Ryde, Chief Executive of Oakhaven, expressed, “We were delighted to welcome Elaine during her visit to Oakhaven. Colten Care has made a substantial impact on Oakhaven Hospice over the past two and a half decades, facilitating the commencement and ongoing implementation of our Complementary Therapy offering.

This offering significantly enhances our holistic approach, enabling us to prioritise wellbeing, relaxation, and independence by providing a diverse range of therapies and treatments that are meticulously tailored to each patient’s unique needs. We extend our sincere gratitude to Colten Care for your unwavering generosity over the past two and a half decades.”
